The Search Sir William Osler, perhaps the most eminent medical practitioner of the twentieth century, commented on the art of healing: The psychical method has always played an important, though largely unrecognized, part in therapeutics. It is from faith, which buoys up the spirits, sets the blood flow- ing more freely and the nerves playing their part without disturbance, that a large part of all cure arises. Despon- dency, or lack of faith, will often sink the stoutest consti- tution almost to death's door; faith will enable a spoonful of water or a bread pill to do almost miracles of healing when the best medicines have been given over n despair. The basis of the entire profession of medicine is faith in the doctor, is drugs, and his methods. Plato attributes to socrates and a physician of Thrace the advice: You ought not to attempt to cure the body without the soul for the part can never be well unless the whole is well. All good and evil, whether in the body or in the human nature, originates in the soul, therefore you must begin by curing the soul. This is the great error of our day, that physicians separate the soul from the body. Two-hundred years earlier, Solon, the Greek statesman, land-reformer, and poet wrote: The smallest hurts sometimes increase and rage more than all art of physic can assuage; Sometimes the fury of the worst disease The hand by gentle stroking will appease. |
